When you’re following someone else’s food rules, you spend a lot of time eating food you don’t love, and avoiding what you crave. With the holiday season approaching, that might mean a lot of mashed cauliflower instead of creamy mashed potatoes, or healthified versions of your favourite desserts that just don’t quite fill that craving.
Diet culture is in full force right now, reminding you to stay strong, to not let the holidays ruin your diet. I’d counter that you should instead worry about your diet ruining the holidays! It’s hard to enjoy yourself when you’re obsessed with every bite of food, when you’re feeling restricted, or when you’re feeling guilt about what you’ve eaten. Instead, forget calories and food rules and eat what you enjoy, and savour it!
Today, I live by the words above. If I don’t like something, I don’t force myself to eat it. And if I love it, I slow down and savour every bite. I’ve learned that I don’t need food rules to know how to nourish my body properly. I no longer try to control the size of my body, and when I quit trying to, my obsession and compulsion around food disappeared. Now, I eat for pleasure, I eat what makes me feel good, I eat when I’m hungry, and I eat what satisfies me. This serves me well through the holidays, and every day in between.
