I fudged the lyrics, trying so hard to remember how to sing. This song is from Adventure Time, when Marceline reveals the Ice King was once someone who took care of her as a child, after the war. He gave up his mind, his soul, his very essence to look after her and keep her safe by utilizing the magic crown. She tries reminding him of who he is by reading hastily scrawled notes he meant for her and never gave. Assuming they are just lyrics he wrote, he begins playing drums and asks her to sing his notes. She gives up and decides to just spend that time as quality time with him, weeping as she sings his final thoughts of clinging to sanity. It hits home in so many personal ways because it touches on so many things: what it is to have dementia, sacrificing yourself only to be despised, or being despised for reasons beyond your control, being the bad guy because your best intentions led you astray, unrequited (and unrequitable) love and what it means to entertain delusions of your deepest wish. Please don’t judge too harshly, I seldom ever try to practice seriously. But, nothing hits me like this scene or renditions of this song.
