here's a snapshot of the #Berlinerdom - Berlin 'Cathedral', taken on my visit to the city last summer.
Located in the centre of Berlin, on the approach to #museumisland,
this beautiful building is not a true #cathedral strictly speaking, as it has never been the seat of a bishop.
However this parish #church has a long #history stretching back to 1454. It's been remodelled & rebuilt multiple times, with the original #renaissance
style church structure being demolished in 1667, rebuilt to a #baroque
design incorporating a #dome
in the 1700s, and then rebuilt again in a #neorenaissance
style in the early 20th Century on the instructions of Kaiser Wilhelm II. This last rebuild saw the church become one of the grandest buildings in Europe, being likened as a Protestant rival to St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Unfortunately, it was heavily damaged during World War II. Efforts to restore the building in the 60s & 70s by the Communist government of East Berlin saw the building undergo significant simplification, with much of the religious iconography being removed for ideological reasons. (Sections of the building undamaged by the War were actually demolished.) The building underwent another round of restoration work in the 1990s following the reunification of #Germany.
Whilst the church today is in the best state it's been for over 50 year, it has still not been restored to its former #grandeur.
There are plans for a full restoration, once the funds can be found for such an undertaking.
I'd definitely recommend a visit to this church - this one building encapsulates the evolution of Berlin & it's a true landmark of the city.
